Dear Colleagues,
I wanted
to let you know that Louis Quindlen (machine shop department chair at Laney College) had his long-planned for retirement from teaching at the end of June (although based on his work ethic, we know he will never truly retire). Louis has been an incredible supporter
of machining education, manufacturing, community colleges, and high schools throughout the Bay Area and statewide for the past two decades (I recognize that not all of you on this list will have worked with, or even heard of Louis, but he’s been my biggest
supporter and ally in all the work that I do in the manufacturing arena).
Under normal circumstances, we would have
a big blow-out party to celebrate all that he's done for the program, the college, and most importantly, us as individuals.
We will still hold that big party in the
future, but until then, we want to celebrate and honor him how we can. We wanted to capture your thoughts, and pictures, to provide him with a memento.
If you could give your input at the site below, that would be great.
We're looking for 3 things:
1) YOUR THOUGHTS / MESSAGES: If you would
like to give Louis a message, we have a place for that. Once we gather all your comments, we'll compile them and then post in some form (maybe on a website and / or create a booklet for him).
2) PICTURES. If you have pictures that would
be good to include, there's a way to post those below. They could include pictures with Louis in it, but other things as well. Maybe you have a picture of the shop when he first took over (it's changed quite a bit :-). Or a picture of a project that Louis
helped make possible (either in the Laney shop, or that you did later at your workplace). Or a picture of students in his class, etc. And it doesn't have to be in the shop. How about at an A's game, a Dead concert, or somewhere out and about in the community!
And extra points if you have one without
him wearing a hat, and triple if you have him in a collared shirt! And we might just send you a gift if you have one of him wearing a tie! ;-)
3) OTHER IDEAS? We're looking for ideas
on what else can we (or you) do. We're going to be looking into setting up a scholarship fund in his name, and I know there are other ideas out there. Anyone want to create something special to honor him? Maybe we get a 3D scan of him and create a bust (3D
print, CNC machine would be ideal, cast, ?). Or create an art piece in some form honoring him. I don't know exactly what to do, so that's why we're asking for your ideas below (or if you just want to do something for him, work away!).
Thanks to all and we'll keep you updated.
Regards,
Mark Martin
