BAY SHIP & YACHT Internships
The following is what we are looking for from the Interns:
· The availability to work two to
three full days per week,
o A
physical abilities assessment, and
o A
pre-employment drug-test,
· Approximately one year of community
college training that includes:
o A
basic understanding of welding learned at the school,
o Some
welding experience (MIG preferred/TIG accepted) gained in the school’s lab,
· A completed Bay Ship & Yacht employment
application,
o To
be forwarded to Chris Pankey, Bay Ship & Yacht Recruiter, along with.
o A
recommendation (or reference) from one of the applicant’s welding instructors,
· Successfully passing an interview
screening with the Welding Manager Jesse Gomez, and
· Interest, engagement, and the desire
to continue learning within a welding environment,
· A focus on maintaining a safe work
environment for themselves , and for all other workers around them, while in the yard and on the job.
· All Interns must be at least 18
years of age.
Once the student has passed all of the screening:
· We will work with the student to
establish a fixed schedule which they will be expected to work,
· We will hire the Interns as temporary
employees, and will pay them $18 per hour,
o Plus
overtime pay in accord with California State Labor Law, if applicable,
Once hired, our welding manager and the department Leads will;
· Work with the students to see that
they are trained in accord with:
o Bay
Ship & Yacht’s Welding Skills Evaluation Form (See attached).
· The managers and/or leads will sign
off on the skills attained, on each student’s checklist.
How to Apply (For interested students):
If after reading this far, you remain interested in the program, please follow these steps to apply:
1. Open
this link, and complete the (simple) survey,
2. Ask
your welding instructor if he/she would be willing to write a referral for you to enter this training program,
a. Once
you have received the referral (or recommendation) letter.
3. Completely
fill out the (attached) application, noting which days of the week you are available to work eight-hour shifts,
4. Submit
the completed application and recommendation letter to Chris Pankey at Bay Ship & Yacht,
a. Once
received, Chris will review the documents, and
5. Then
we will call you to schedule an interview and welding test with the Welding Manager.
6. The
next step after passing the interview and welding test, is to schedule a day for you to go to a pre-employment physical and drug test (at Concentra),
a. For
the pre-employment physical abilities exam and drug test,
b. You
must pass these tests in order to be accepted into Bay Ship’s training program.
c. It
takes two to five days to receive the test results.
d. Once
Bay Ship receives word that you passed these tests,
7. Chris
Pankey will reach out to you to schedule your attendance in the next Orientation and Safety Training Class.
a. All
welders must come to this class clean-shaven in order to secure a proper respirator fit.
b. These
classes are usually held on Thursdays.
8. Following
your satisfactory completion of this class, you will then be free to begin your scheduled workdays.
