OK. Here’s a job posting that many of you should be interested in. Machinist position for the city of San Francisco.

Even though it says they want someone that’s been through an apprenticeship, I would still apply if you can make the pitch as to why they should hire you (your training in college, other work experience, etc.). Companies are finding it hard to find journeyman machinists so they might not have that many applications.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Under general direction, the Maintenance Machinist performs preventive, routine and emergency maintenance and repair of a variety of heavy and light equipment, related systems and components.   Essential functions include: setting up and operating a variety of machine tools, stationary as well as portable manual machine tools and Computer Numeric Control (CNC) machine tools such as mills, lathes, drills, saws etc.; rebuilding, refinishing, modifying and/or fabricating replacement parts for pumps,  generators, cranes, parking meters, transit vehicles/railway coaches and railway cars, fire alarm boxes, compressors, dredges, pipes lines, barges, ferry terminals and their components; maintaining and repairing a variety of instruments and mechanical equipment, including valves, castings, and various metal parts; diagnosing, installing, inspecting and testing machinery, parts and equipment; reading and interpreting schematic drawings, blueprints, and plans; preparing and maintaining records and forms documenting work performed; dismantling and assembling light and heavy machines and/or equipment; manufacturing/fabricating parts based on samples; and performing related duties as required.
 
Nature of Work: involves exposure to adverse physical and working condition and lifting objects weighing in excess of 70 pounds.  Incumbents will be required to work varying hours and/or shifts, including weekends, evening and holidays in a 24 hour/7 days-a week operation.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1.      Completion of a recognized four (4) year Maintenance Machinist's Apprenticeship Program and two (2) years of full-time verifiable  experience as a journey-level Maintenance Machinist performing duties equivalent to Job Code 7332 Maintenance Machinist (with primary responsibility in maintenance/repair rather than limited to machine tool operations);OR
 
2.      Two (2) years of  trade-related training and four (4) years of full-time verifiable experience as a journey-level Maintenance Machinist performing duties equivalent to Job Code 7332 Maintenance Machinist (with primary responsibility in maintenance/repair rather than limited to machine tool operations); AND
 
3.      Possession of a valid Class C driver license.
 
Notes:
A.      For positions at the Port of San Francisco, the journey-level Maintenance Machinist experience indicated under minimum qualifications #1 and #2 MUST have been in the maintenance and operation of diesel engine and pile driving equipment. B.      Trade-related training refers to programs such as machine tool technology program.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Written/Performance Examination: (Weight: 100%)
Candidates deemed eligible and admitted to the examination process will be administered a written/performance test designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include but not limited to: knowledge of machining methods and principles, knowledge of basic shop math, knowledge of safety rules, knowledge of materials, and ability to read/modify schematic drawings, blueprints etc..
 
This is a standardized examination and, therefore, test questions and test answers are not available for public inspection or review.
  
CERTIFICATION RULE:
The certification rule used for the eligible list resulting from this selection process will be the Rule of Three Scores.  The hiring department may conduct additional selection processes to make final hiring decisions.
