DESCRIPTION


EXTENDED DEADLINE

Napa Valley College is seeking a Machine Tool Shop Technician in Machine Tool Technology. The Machine Tool Technology Program provides the needed training to set up and operate conventional machine tools and modern machining and turning centers.  The program provides experience in using computers to program modern computer numerical controlled (CNC) machines.  The incumbent in this position will assist faculty and provide support services for laboratory instruction, as well as manage the laboratory facilities.  The position reports to the Dean, Career Technical Education and Economic Workforce Development.
 
This is a part-time (20 hours per week), 10-months-per-year, classified position.  The salary will be appropriate placement on range 22 of the current Classified Salary Schedule. The starting salary range is $1,973 to $2,284/month, with future steps up to $2,645.50/month.  Placement is made based on experience.  The college offers a fringe benefit package including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, employee assistance program, and public employee retirement system membership.  The district benefit allotment is prorated for less-than-full-time and less-than-twelve-month employees.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Oversee Machine Shop
Maintain inventory of lab items and order replacement stock and materials; follow appropriate lab protocol and enforce lab safety rules; train and supervise student assistants; assist faculty and staff with lab procedures and materials; provide orientation to part-time and substitute faculty; adhere to OSHA regulations regarding safety and hazardous materials.
 
Manage Laboratory Facilities and Equipment
Maintain instructional equipment; repair machine tools and precision instruments; assist in the removal of old equipment and the installation of new equipment; set up machine tools for student projects; write Computer Numerical Control (CNC) programs for student demonstrations and high school tours; troubleshoot computer and Mastercam problems; assist in the removal of hazmat coolant in machine tools.
 
Prepare and Maintain Lab Materials    
Prepare and distribute lab materials; set up and operate machine tools and computers; maintain control of precision tools; supervise the cleaning of the lab equipment.
 
Work with Students                       
Supervise and direct students in the Machine Shop; check students' lab work and grade projects; tutor students, answer questions, clarify assignments; demonstrate and instruct in the use of lab equipment and proper and safe lab procedures; supervise testing; monitor progress.
 
General Programmatic Support     
Provide technical or academic problem-solving and troubleshooting in assigned instructional area; perform some clerical duties, such as records management; perform other related duties as assigned.
 

QUALIFICATIONS


Minimum Qualifications
 
Knowledge of:       

  • Subject matter terminology, techniques, equipment, and materials used in the instructional area to which assigned, as demonstrated through college-level coursework, experience, and/or other assessment.
  • Must have the equivalency of journeyperson level experience in the machine tool trade and be proficient in machine tool repair.
  • Knowledge of machinery moving and rigging.
  • Basic elements of the learning-teaching process;
  • General needs and behaviors of students.

Ability to:

  • Assist with instructional activities, supervise students, and explain lab assignments;
  • Operate each machine tool in the lab, both conventional and CNC proficiently ;
  • Use MasterCam to program CNC machines and to send files to and from computers;
  • Lift heavy objects, push or pull to locate machines during installation;
  • Learn the procedures, functions, and requirements of assigned duties;
  • Recognize student progress and take effective measures to enhance continued achievement;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
  • Assist students in the use of instructional equipment;
  • Tutor in instructional area(s) to which assigned;
  • Work in campus network and computer-based applications; standard knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs, electronic mail, and the Internet.

  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic background of community college students.
  • Conceptual and theoretical command of designated subject matter.
