Departmental Overview
This position is critical to the Department of Mechanical Engineering’s academic and instructional teaching mission. A majority of Mechanical Engineering’s courses require complex instructional laboratories to illustrate and provide practical experience to the undergraduate student population. This position also is critical in maintaining safe, supervised laboratory operations; many of the laboratories have unique and potentially volatile experiments. Experienced oversight in the construction, maintenance and the students’ interaction of these instructional apparatus is paramount towards developing a positive student experience while reducing the potential risk of injury.
Responsibilities
60%  Responsibilities and Duties: Instructional Laboratory Support (Essential functions)
Perform functional design, fabrication, modification, setup, demonstration, and technical support of new and existing instructional apparatus.  Perform calibration, testing of equipment and verification of the experiments functionality .  Assist in training staff and graduate student instructors (GSIs) on proper demonstration and presentation of the instructional laboratories.  Assist in research for new instructional laboratory equipment needed: including specifications, cost, and availability.  The incumbent must be available to answer questions, provide accurate technical information, provide technical troubleshooting support of the instructional experiments and promote student safety during instructional laboratory hours. 

15%  Responsibilities and Duties: Precision Fabrication & Machining   (Essential functions)
Perform all the duties of a precision machinist/fabricator, working on unique and potentially volatile experiments. Work with faculty, staff and students in the design and fabrication of complex class and research projects. Operate all standard instruments in the area of machining, metalworking, and welding. 

15%  Electronics, Data Acquisition, Software Technician: (Essential functions)
Perform all of the duties of an electronics technician include design, repair, calibration and maintenance functions on analog and digital electronics and electromechanical systems.
Write, modify and debug graphical data acquisition programs.  Maintain and update laboratory computers and local networks.  Develop and maintain schematics and documentation of the laboratory systems.

10%  Responsibilities and Duties: Other Duties    (Essential functions)

Maintain and repair shop and instructional laboratory machinery and equipment as necessary. Act as information resource and communication link on safety matters. Assist with maintaining chemical inventory and other safety records. Perform office and laboratory maintenance including moving of offices, labs, and equipment, as well as other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
• Required: The incumbent must have completed a formal apprenticeship or two year college level training program in Machine Tool Technology, Electronics or equivalent discipline.
• Proven technical skill and knowledge at the Senior Laboratory Mechanician level in mechanical and electrical disciplines.
• Ability to work from rough sketches, drawings and oral information with a high degree of comprehension solving complex design and fabrication problems from design phase through construction. 
• Demonstrated ability to plan, estimate, and execute design, fabrication and repair projects according to established timelines and budgets.
• Must be mentor/instruction minded and possess excellent communication skills and ability to interact in a positive manner with campus community, including students, in a multi-cultural environment.
• Good customer service and demonstrated ability to work with frequent interruptions a must.
• Record of reliability including excellent attendance and punctuality.
• Ability to work effectively as a member of a team; excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
• Computer and software literacy including email, word processing, experiment documentation, graphical user interface programming, and relevant internet research. 
• Adhere to all university and departmental safety guidelines.  Attend job-related and safety training as required.
• Ability to meet standards described in the Physical/Environmental/Mental Demands Form (PEM) 
• Ability to safely move supplies and objects up to 75 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
• Knowledge in the fabrication of sheet metal, TIG/MIG welding and other metal joining processes.  
• Experience with Solid Works, Auto Cad or equivalent drafting software

*The hourly salary range designated for this position:  $29.62 - $34.03; however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
