Allied Fire Protection is looking for competent people that are skilled in the use of an Autocad type of program.  The actual program that is used here at AFP is typically not taught in colleges, ie Hydracad or AutoSprink.   The standard that we use is called NFPA #13, which I imagine is also not discussed in schools.  

We are also involved with 3D BIM disciplines but do not use Solid Works, rather we use Navis software.  However, Navis is merely used for clash detection, the main programs we use for designing fire sprinkler systems are Hydracad or Autosprink.  Since there are not many places that teach fire sprinkler system design then it comes down to on the job training for employees.  The best that prospective employees can do is to be well skilled in some type of Autocad.   What we desire is a student that is skilled in computer drafting, have a good sense of 3D space, some decent math skills and an honest work ethic.   Also, it is important to note that communication skills are important, as there is a fair amount of interaction with other MEP trades during the coordination phase of a project.   Also, in time, there will be discussions with Building or Fire officials in order to obtain permits and code compliant approved plans.
