Dear Manufacturing Colleagues,
The Laney College Dimensional Metrology class is currently enrolling students for it’s first class this Fall (De Anza will begin enrolling for their class in 2019). If you have anyone who is interested in taking the class, please let them know (see details below).
A favor to ask - we are looking for parts (metal, plastic, other materials) that we can use in the class for students to measure. If you have parts that aren’t proprietary (we would also need the drawing for the part - and the customer name would be omitted), please let me know. They could be rejected parts (although for some parts we would like 10-20 parts for use by the students). A list of the types of features the instructor would like are below.
If you think you could supply us with parts for this important new class, please let me know.
Thanks,
Mark
Parts for lab projects (need qty of 10-20)
· A turned part with a cam feature
· Milled hole circles
· Larger parts that are more difficult to work with and use more tools.
o Does not need to be sets of 10, could be individual one-offs.
Other interesting features:
· Hole patterns, hole circles
· Outside threads
· Features on all sides
· Cross-holes that could have a distance requirement
· Parts in multiple pieces
· Parts with milled and turned features
· Angled faces
· Parts that may show “movement” due to flexibility, thin walled, etc.

Hi all,
The Dimensional Metrology class at Laney (MACH 211) is open for enrollment. It meets SATURDAYS, from 9 am - 2 pm, starting on August 25 and goes through December 8. The plan is for the De Anza (Cupertino) class to be available in Winter or Spring 2019.
As a prerequisite for the Laney class, you need to have some basic metrology (calipers and micrometers) and print-reading experience - either from work, or from a classroom setting. If you don’t have that experience, you should enroll in the MACH 210 course at Laney (or another entry-level machining course at one of the other colleges - such as Chabot or De Anza).
To enroll in the class, you need to do the following:
1) Get a Peralta student ID.
- If you don’t have one, you’ll need to get a student ID #: http://web.peralta.edu/admissions/question/
- NOTE: When it asks you why you’re taking the certificate, indicate that you are doing it to upgrade skills. Don’t input that you are doing it to get a certificate (that will trigger a requirement to take the assessment test). If you are planning on getting a certificate, no worries, we can change that later.
2) WAIVER FORM: If you haven’t taken Laney’s MACH 210 course, but have the previous experience mentioned above (basic metrology and print reading),
a) fill out the attached PDF waiver form,
b) SIGN IT
c) EMAIL IT to me and to Louis Quindlen (department chair). lquindlen@peralta.edu
3) If the waiver is approved, you will get enrolled in the class automatically (assuming it hasn’t filled up by then). Check your Peralta account 10 days after emailing us the form to make sure it shows you as enrolled.
4) Pay the course tuition & fees (approx. $150) by August 4, 2018 by going to your online account (or in person at Laney). If you don’t pay by then, they will drop you from the class.
We look forward to having you as part of the class.
Thanks,
Mark
