Dear Manufacturers,
As you might be aware, De Anza College and Laney College both have developed a Quality Control certificate - which includes a Dimensional Metrology class.

The Dimensional Metrology classes are seeking help from local manufacturers to support our student’s education. The instructors are asking for donations of industry parts and prints to use in labs and demonstrations. These parts could be leftover obsolete parts, scrap, overstock, or anything else you can donate. If you have parts that you can contribute, please let me know. I can plan on picking up the parts, or have them shipped to us.

The ideal parts for a class setting are:

·      Multiples of the same. At least 6 of each is ideal. More is better.

·      In reasonably good condition for handling. No sharp burrs, Decent surface finish.

·      Reasonable size. No feature greater than 12 inches. Less than 5 pounds.

·      Lathe-dominated features, Mill-dominated features. Mix of lathe/mill.

·      Prints to go with the parts. They can be altered or redacted as necessary.

o   One heavy focus of the class is interpreting prints, inspection parts directly to prints, choosing the correct tool, and comparing different methods. So a good industry print with parts is very helpful.

If you have something to donate and it does not fit the ideal criteria, that is OK . We could also use a variety of parts for the “bone yard” just to practice with. Larger parts to practice larger tools with is good as well. We can even recreate prints if necessary.

The main focus of the dimensional metrology class is with the following tool categories: Calipers, OD Mics, Specialized Mics, Hole Inspection, Surface Plate Inspection, Angle Inspection, Thread Inspection, CMM, Optical Comparator, and Surface Finish.

Some examples of past parts donated are below.

Thanks for your help, and if you have any questions, please let me know.

Regards,
Mark

P.S. If you want to have some of your employees enroll in the class, please let me know. Laney class starts tomorrow, De Anza class starts in January.
